This £210,000 project involved replacing an aging heating and hot water system that had been in service since the early 2000s. The project required careful planning and execution to ensure compliance with the building’s listed status, while upgrading the system to incorporate modern, energy-efficient technology.

Design & Build Services

Ecomec provided a full design and build service, working closely with the client to meet their specific requirements. The project included a Stage 4 RIBA Design, which encompassed:

• Selection of new gas-fired condensing boilers.
• Detailed Domestic Hot Water (DHW) and Low-Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) heating load calculations.
• BIM (Building Information Modelling) for enhanced project visualization and planning.

Key Installations

Ecomec replaced the outdated heating and hot water plant with high-efficiency solutions designed to improve performance and reduce energy consumption. Key features of the project included:

• Boilers: Installation of two new Viessmann Vitodens 200-W gas-fired condensing boilers.
• Hydraulic Separation: Integration of a gasketed plate heat exchanger to ensure system separation.
• Hot Water System: Installation of a Stokvis Econoplate domestic hot water plate heat exchanger, complete with a 550L buffer vessel for thermal storage.
• Pumps: New primary and secondary heating pumps and return pumps to maintain water circulation.
• Flue System: Installation of a new flue system tailored to the requirements of the condensing boilers.
• Pressurization Unit: Addition of a dual-system pressurization unit for system stability.

Enhanced Controls & Safety

To ensure the system was user-friendly and future-proof, Ecomec installed:

• A modern Building Management System (BMS) with a full graphics upgrade.
• A touch-screen controller for ease of operation and monitoring.
• A gas safety system to safeguard the plant in emergencies, ensuring a safe shutdown of operations.

Scope of Works

The project’s detailed scope of works included:

• Decommissioning: Isolation, decommissioning, and removal of the existing two Hoval gas-fired forced-draught boilers and hot water calorifiers.
• New Installations: Supply and installation of:
  • Two Viessmann Vitodens 200-W gas-fired condensing boilers.
  • A new flue system with a compatible liner.
  • A gasketed plate heat exchanger for hydraulic separation.
  • A Stokvis Econoplate domestic hot water plate heat exchanger with a 550L buffer vessel.
  • New heating and hot water pumps, dosing pots, and an air dirt separator.
  • A new BMS panel, motorized valves, and all associated field wiring.
• System Flushing: Comprehensive flushing and cleaning of the heating and hot water system to ensure optimal performance.

The upgraded system provides enhanced efficiency, reliability, and ease of operation, delivering significant energy savings for the client while maintaining hot water circulation and consistent heating throughout the building.

The use of modern, energy-efficient technology aligns with contemporary environmental standards, ensuring long-term benefits for this historic property.
